Portland Coffee Roasters Announces 13th Annual Holiday Roast Coffee and Fundraiser

Rosibel Gonzalez, a coffee farmer and member of Nicaraguan coffee co- op SOPPEXCCA, says, “It’s a great advantage to grow vegetables without pesticides so we don’t jeopardize the health of our children.
Rosibel Gonzalez started small – but now grows enough healthy, organic produce to feed her family and earn enough extra income to send her daughter to college.
Elvia Monzon is a member of ACODIHUE, Food 4 Farmers’ community partner in Huehuetenango, Guatemala. She’s added bee hives to her cof- fee farm, where she now produces high quality honey sold to specialty buyers in the EU, along with her farm’s high-quality specialty coffee.
Isabella de la Cruz Medina (center) with her father Domingo de la Cruz, the coordinator of Maya Ixil’s beekeeping program. She’s a member of the cooperative and manages 10 hives. She also works as a beekeeping promoter, providing support for other beekeepers. She’s also pursuing a career in agronomy, taking classes on weekends so she can care for her apiary and do her work as a promoter during the week.
Lilliam Arauz Perez (right) is an agricultural engineer with a Master’s degree in rural development. She’s the Food Security Coordinator at Food 4 Farmers community partner SOPPEXCCA in Jinotega, Nicaragua. “Teaching people to grow their own food on small plots gives value to the land they have,” she tells us. Sandra Obando (left) is a coffee farmer who is using her small plot to feed her family, save on food costs, and earn extra income by selling her beautiful organic produce at the local farmers market.
With Food 4 Farmers, Colombian coffee farmer association Nuevo Fu- turo has developed a cadre of young Community Promoters to support farming families who are working to diversify their farms with the goal of healthy food for families, and more income to supplement their coffee livelihoods.
Colombian coffee cooperative COMEPCAFE’s 1400 indigenous mem- ber-families now have access to locally grown traditional crops and reci- pes, thanks to strategies that honor their food heritage and culture. Clara Cometa is a member of COMEPCAFE, and regularly sells food grown on her farm at community food exchanges, where participants display their produce and share their knowledge.
Ana de la Cruz, a member of the Maya Ixil coffee cooperative in Guate- mala, is managing xxx hives with her husband Juan Torres Ordoñez that produce delicious, high quality honey to supplement her family’s coffee income. Her family also consumes honey, propolis, and pollen – an im- portant source of protein for growing kids.
Juan Torres Ordoñez and his wife, Ana de la Cruz are members of the Maya Ixil coffee cooperative in Guatemala, and participate as a family in Food 4 Farmers’ beekeeping program. They’ve taken diversification to heart, and now grow coffee, keep bees & sell honey, and run a small community store & woodshop to build bee boxes – all on their small farm.
